We knew it wouldn’t take too long before some government stiffs got their panties in a bunch over the new Facebook facial recognition feature that was unveiled to the masses last week.
The liberal state of Connecticut and its’ Attorney General George Jepsen has said that they would like to meet with Facebook as soon as possible. Jepsen says he has deep concerns about the privacy issue of the facial recognition software. His main problem with the system is that it is an opt out service, not something that you opt in to. Also, he is unaware of the long term effects that facial recognition software will have in terms of privacy.
Facebook said that they are eager to talk with Jepsen and to further explain the Tag Suggestion model that the company is using. Basically, they want to explain that opting out is easy and the service is just part of the site experience. If people don’t want to use it, change your privacy settings so it doesn’t show. If anyone is really concerned about their privacy online, they wouldn’t be blasting their photos all over Facebook so that their face can be recognized.
Basically, Facebook is trying to make the user experience faster and better then ever. Instead of tagging your favorite friends in photos, which can take awhile, they now are able to suggest which friends it may be by using this software.
Those who opt out of using the software can still be tagged, but it can only be done manually, not suggested. Just like other privacy options that are on the site, it can be easily changed. But that is not enough for those who seem to want to fight every little thing Facebook does.
Here is my thought on the whole Facebook privacy issues. If you don’t want your information out there, don’t use the site! Facebook is a networking site meant to connect you with other people all over the world. It has plenty of settings in place so that you can protect your privacy and photos if you really want to. Most people use these privacy settings and 99% of the people never worry about a single thing.
However, like most things in the American culture, those who talk the loudest think they can control everything, even if the majority think that all is okay. So again, we will have to bow down and listen to the wishes a few loud mouths who think they know the best for the world. Sorry, but I like my Facebook the way it is.
