Alyssa Campenella, otherwise know as Miss California before Sunday night, is now officially Miss USA, shedding her old title of the winner of California.
She bested 51 other contestants at the annual Miss USA pageant, which was being held in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Donald Trump owned show is the most popular pageant in the United States, with it being held on prime time TV. And most Americans are talking about it this morning.
She also showed poise and street smarts during the evening gown show. She had to answer some questions from judges, and she got a touchy one. Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, founder of OPI, wanted to know her stance on medical marijuana. And her answer was about as good as you can do for a pageant, where your intention is to offend no one while impressing everyone.
She said that while it makes her a bit uncomfortable, she believes that if it truly is medically beneficial, then people should be able to use it in certain situation. Spoken like a true politician.
Alyssa now gets to go to the Miss Universe pageant and hopefully bring the title of Miss Universe to the United States. That will take place in September.
In attendance were former winners of the famed pageant. In fact, there were winners at the show dating all the way back to 1953, and each wore a sash proudly displaying which year that they won in. The camera showed them plenty of times, and they waved and smiled happily each time they were shown.
This year also showcased some new technology, as people in the audience and people at home could now rate the performances and vote for their favorites. While these scores did not affect the judging at all, it was a fun way to see how America felt about certain girls compared to how the judges viewed them.
Also, if you were not able to get to a TV in time, you were able to watch the preliminary and the semifinal round via a stream online. While the final was not available online, it at least helped to spread the viewer base of the pageant, hopefully to gain more international exposure for the event.
Campanella takes over the reign of Rima Fakih, who was the first Muslim and Arab-American to win the crown. Fakih faced questions tirelessly about her faith and other photos that showed her dancing on a pole, but her clothes were on at all times.
